Pre-Vacation Plumbing Checklist

Summertime is when many homeowners take a vacation and leave their homes for an extended period of time. While it's nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it's important to do some preparation work before you go in order to prevent any plumbing issues while you're gone. In this blog post, Precision Plumbing, Heating & Air will provide a checklist of tasks that you can complete before leaving town so that your plumbing system stays in good shape while you're gone!

Turn off Your Water Supply

The first thing you'll want to do is turn off the main water supply to your home. This will prevent any water from entering your home while you're away, which could cause serious damage if there is a leak or burst pipe. Turning off your water supply is the simplest way to prevent a flood in your home while you’re on vacation.

Drain or Turn off Your Water Heater

Another important task is to drain or turn off your water heater. Many water heaters have a “vacation mode” that you can easily set it to as well. Since most traditional water heaters run on electricity or gas, they are using energy while they’re turned on. If you turn off your water heater while you’re out of town, you’ll be saving money on your utility bill as well as preventing the possibility of a leak.

If you drain it, be sure to open all the faucets in your home so that air can enter the system and prevent any leaks. You can also schedule a water heater maintenance appointment with Precision Plumbing, Heating & Air before you head out of town to ensure everything is functioning properly.

Drain Outdoor Faucets

Don't forget about draining your outdoor faucets! Once you’ve turned your water supply off, it’s important to disconnect any outdoor hoses and allow the remaining water in the pipes to drain.

Clean Your Drains

Before you go, take some time to clean your bathroom and kitchen drains. This will help prevent any clogs while you're away. You can use a plunger or a drain snake to remove any debris that has built up in the pipes.

Following these simple tips will help ensure that your plumbing system stays in good shape while you're away on vacation.
